MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that he will visit the United States this The Russian navy successfully tested a potential hypersonic missile on Monday, according to the military.
The Admiral Gorshkov ship launched the Zircon cruise missile into the White Sea, striking a practise target 400 kilometres (215 nautical miles) away, according to the Defense Ministry.
The launch was the most recent in a series of trials for Zircon, which will go into operation next year.
Zircon, according to President Vladimir Putin, will be able to travel at nine times the speed of sound and have a 1,000-kilometer range (620 miles). Putin has stated that its deployment will greatly enhance Russia’s military capabilities.
Russian cruisers, frigates, and submarines will all be equipped with Zircon. It’s one of many hypersonic missiles that Russia is working on.
During the tensions with the West that followed Russia’s acquisition of Ukraine’s Crimea in 2014, the Kremlin has made updating the country’s arsenals a primary priority.
