Russia has declared that it is restricting access to Facebook in part, after the US social media giant failed to comply with a Russian government request to disable fact-checkers and content warning labels on its platforms in the midst of the country’s invasion on Ukraine.
Roskomnadzor, Russia’s communications regulator, said on Friday that Facebook has rejected its calls to relax limitations on four Russian media outlets on its platform, including the RIA news agency, the Defense Ministry’s Zvezda TV, and the websites gazeta.ru and lenta.ru.
Social media platforms have become one of the front lines in Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, providing both incorrect information and real-time monitoring of a rapidly escalating conflict.
