Some Twitter (TWTR.N) users in Russia are being blocked, according to a message from the social media firm on Saturday.
One day after Russia invaded Ukraine, Moscow said that it was restricting access to Meta Platforms Inc’s (FB.O) Facebook, company was accused of “censoring” Russian media.
Twitter stated that it was striving to ensure that its service remained secure and accessible. When asked if Russia had talked with the corporation about any steps, it did not immediately comment.
Twitter has been blocked on major networks, according to NetBlocks, an internet restriction monitoring service. On Saturday, a Reuters correspondent in Moscow said that the site was sluggish and that posting tweets was difficult.
For years, Russia has tried to tighten its grip over the internet and huge digital companies, in moves that critics say endanger individual and corporate freedom and are part of a larger crackdown on outspoken Kremlin critics.
Last year, Moscow limited Twitter’s performance as a form of retaliation for the site’s failure to remove unlawful information.
