On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed his defence chiefs to activate the country’s nuclear “deterrence forces,” accusing the West of pursuing “unfriendly” actions against his country.

International tensions are already high as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Putin’s directive would exacerbate the situation.

Moscow possesses the world’s second-largest nuclear arsenal, as well as a sizable stockpile of ballistic missiles that serve as the backbone of the country’s deterrent forces.

“I command the defence minister and the chief of the Russian armed forces’ general staff to place the Russian army’s deterrent forces in a special mode of combat duty,” Putin stated.
