LONDON(AFP)- In punishment for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, the UK government sanctioned billionaire businessman Alisher Usmanov and former deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov on Thursday.
According to the Foreign Office, the pair, who are worth a total of $19 billion (£14 billion) and have “significant interests in the UK and close links to the Kremlin,” have been “sanctioned with immediate effect.”
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the sanctions send a “clear message” that “we will punish billionaires and anybody directly linked with Putin’s regime.”
The UK has been chasing Russian oligarchs since Moscow’s invasion, adding 13 to its list, increasing the total to 15.
