According to officials, at least 23 passengers were killed after a bus collided with a vehicle in eastern Tanzania on Friday.

“The dead toll has now risen to 23,” stated Liberatus Sabas, the police chief of operations and training.

Fortunatus Muslim, a police chief in Morogoro’s eastern area, said the accident happened near Melela Kibaoni, around 200 kilometres (120 miles) west of the coastal city and commercial centre Dar es Salaam.

“A truck driver was passing a motorbike on his way from Dar es Salaam to the Democratic Republic of Congo when the two vehicles met head-on,” he claimed.

He stated that the bus was travelling in the opposite way, from Mbeya in the west to Tanga on the coast.

The president announced late Friday that 22 people had perished in the collision and another 38 had been wounded.

On Saturday, 37 people were still injured after the latest tragedy.

Sabas stated, “Three injured have been taken to Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam for further treatment.”
