Five Egyptian soldiers were murdered by terrorists in northern Sinai on Wednesday, the second deadly attack on security forces on the peninsula in less than a week, prompting the military to respond with air strikes.

Armed individuals opened fire early Wednesday morning at a security station on the shore of northern Sinai, only a few kilometres from the Gaza Strip’s border, according to two security sources.

The fatalities come after an assault on a checkpoint in Sinai on May 7 that claimed the lives of 11 Egyptian troops and was claimed by Islamic State. It was one of the worst strikes in recent years.
