At the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, more than 250 Ukrainian combatants surrendered to Russian forces, and Kyiv announced that its entire garrison had been ordered to evacuate, signalling the end of Europe’s bloodiest battle in decades.
According to Reuters, five buses left the steelworks overnight and arrived at the Russian-controlled town of Novoazovsk, where they will be treated for wounds, according to Moscow.
Wounded men were laying on stretchers three bunks high in one, which was marked with the Latin letter Z, which has become a symbol of Russia’s attack. One man was wheeled out with huge bandages over his head.
