Ukraine ordered its final forces holed up in Mariupol’s Azovstal steelworks to lay down their arms on Friday, as Russia announced the end of its months-long battle to conquer the important port city.
Russia has been accused of war crimes for flattening Mariupol, including a devastating attack on a maternity facility, and Ukraine has launched judicial proceedings for detained Russian forces.
After 21-year-old sergeant Vadim Shishimarin admitted to killing an unarmed civilian early in the attack, the first post-invasion trial of a Russian soldier for war crimes neared its conclusion in Kyiv. The decision is expected on Monday.
