President Joe Biden promised on Monday that if China tried to seize control of Taiwan militarily, the US would defend it militarily, prompting Beijing to warn that America was “playing with fire.”
Biden made his toughest words on the matter to yet in Tokyo, comparing China’s threat to self-ruled Taiwan to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, amid escalating concerns over Beijing’s growing economic and military strength.
“Yes… That’s the commitment we made,” he said emphatically when asked if Washington was willing to intervene militarily to safeguard Taiwan.
