LAHORE: On Saturday, a writ petition was submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC) asking for contempt charges to be brought against Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah for “ridiculing” the legal system by leaking an audio recording of a lawyer and his client.

In his petition, petitioner Muhammad Shahid Rana claimed that on February 16, Sanaullah admitted in a press conference to listening in on a telephone conversation between Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, the former chief minister of Punjab, and his lawyer, Supreme Court Bar Association President Abid Shahid Zuberi.

The petitioner claimed that the interior minister released the recording alleging that the former chief minister sought to schedule a case before his favourite judge in an effort to get a favourable ruling.

According to him, a client and attorney’s interaction was a “restricted communication entirely protected and barred to be intercepted or stolen under to…Article 9 of Qanoon-e-Shahadat Order 1984.”

According to the petition, the interior minister unlawfully recorded a client’s chat with his attorney via his subordinate public employees and then instructed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to file a complaint against them.

He urged that the Sanaullah be called before the court and charged in line with the law.
