The UN said Friday that in addition to the hundreds of thousands of people who have been displaced inside the nation as a result of the conflict that started in mid-April, about 200,000 people have now departed Sudan.
According to Olga Sarrado, spokesperson for the UN agency for refugees, “nearly 200,000 refugees and returnees have been forced to flee the country as violence in Sudan continues for a fourth week, with more crossing borders daily in search of safety.”
The conflict that started on April 15 has resulted in more than 750 fatalities and 5,000 injuries, according to the UN migration agency, while more than 700,000 people have also been displaced within Sudan.
Speaking of those leaving the nation, Sarrado cautioned that “the humanitarian response is challenging and expensive,” noting that “refugees and returnees are arriving in remote border areas where services and infrastructure are scarce or nonexistent and the host population was already suffering due to climate change and food scarcity.”
Logistics would be considerably more difficult during the upcoming rainy season since many routes will become unusable, she said.
She stated that 30,000 people have just arrived in adjacent Chad, raising the total number of refugees from Sudan who had entered in recent weeks to 60,000.
