The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 and the Punjab Agricultural Marketing Regulatory Ordinance Authority (Amendment) Ordinance 2023 were both published on Sunday by Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rahman.
The governor enacted the first ordinance in accordance with Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc). It was not practical to immediately notify the Cabinet of every serious emergency.
The passing of the Amendment Ordinance has simplified the legal requirements for implementing Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code under emergency circumstances. The Deputy Commissioner or any other individual specifically empowered by the Punjab government shall be permitted to issue orders under Section 144 of the Amendment Ordinance in urgent situations.
