On Sunday morning, a tractor trailer and a van collided on a highway in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, killing 26 people, according to local police.

The two vehicles collided on a route between the cities of Zaragoza and Hidalgo in Tamaulipas, roughly half an hour outside the state capital Ciudad Victoria, and subsequently caught fire, according to the Tamaulipas public security ministry.

When officials arrived at the scene of the collision, they discovered that the vehicle hauling the trailer had vanished.

According to a source in the Tamaulipas prosecutors’ office, investigators are uncertain if the truck’s driver left or was killed in the incident.
