ROME – World number one Carlos Alcaraz was knocked out in the third round of the Italian Open by unheralded Hungarian Fabian Marozsan, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Monday.

The 20-year-old Spaniard entered the competition with victories in Barcelona and Madrid, but was outplayed by Marozsan, who is rated 135th in the world.

Marozsan, 23, claimed the final six points of the second-set tiebreaker to serve as a wake-up message to US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz, with the French Open coming in less than a fortnight.
