According to media estimates, at least 50 people were killed and 300 were injured when a passenger train derailed and crashed with a cargo train in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday.

Rescue efforts are continuing at the site, and “all possible assistance” is being provided to those impacted, said India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet on Friday.

The crash was described as a “grave accident” by West Bengal’s chief secretary, H K Dwivedi. South Eastern Railway authorities, who did not want to be identified, said they expect major casualties but did not specify how many people died.
