On Friday, senior officials from more than a dozen countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iran, met to expand ties and position themselves as a counterweight to the West. They addressed strengthening ties with the Brics group of big emerging economies.

A growing number of countries, particularly in the global South, have shown interest in joining Brics, which already includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Brics was originally considered a loose coalition of varied emerging economies, but in recent years, it has taken on a more defined form, propelled initially by China and more recently by the commencement of the Ukraine War in February 2022.
