Defending double world champion Max Verstappen outperformed teammate Sergio Perez in the first practise session of the Spanish Grand Prix on Friday.

The title leader was in command, building on his win in Monaco last Sunday to show that his team and vehicle can adapt to any circuit with dictatorial dominance.

Verstappen completed a fastest lap in one minute and 14.606 seconds, beating his Mexican championship rival by 0.768 seconds and leaving Esteban Ocon of Alpine eighth-tenths behind in third.
